Heka Incorporated is a Massachusetts vertically integrated medical/adult cannabis company, looking for an energetic Cultivation Manager to join our team, as we build our company to three locations within 2021-2022

The Cultivation Manager will help to create and implement the vision and best practices as set forth by the Director of Cultivation and the Company leadership team. This role will be required to interface with the executive management team. This position requires an expert level understanding of plant health, genetics, pests, pathogens, company SOPs, and all tasks associated with the growing and harvesting of cannabis. Assists the management team in leading daily tasks and keeping all parts of production on cadence and up to compliance. This position directly reports to the Director of Cultivation the CEO. The position oversees all cultivation operations including propagation, indoor cultivation methodologies, plant health, plant nutrition, harvesting, curing, & R&D practices. Provides professional leadership, guidance, and horticulture training to the cultivation team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage cultivation by initiating, coordinating, developing, and enforcing the cultivation program.
  • Manage operational protocols, safety protocols, personnel policies, and Heka’s procedures.
  • Maintain METRC compliance in all cultivation aspects.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts State Laws regarding Cannabis.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a detailed schedule.
  • Proficient in time management and balancing labor cost
  • Constantly ensures cultivation excellence in all aspects of operations.
  • Ability to improve efficiency of cultivation processes.
  • Establish Quarterly and Yearly goals for Cultivation based on production needs.
  • Create weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly projections for plant yields and trim weights. Communicate weekly production updates to the Director of Cultivation. Ensure all tasks involving the Cultivation Department are completed with precision, consistency and on-time. These include propagation, transplanting, plant nutrition, plant training, defoliation, plant health, IPM, plant flow charts, genetic library development, phenotype hunting, research and development processes, plant and process data collection.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with all stages of development of the cannabis.
  • Proficient communication with processing department.
  • Establish the Target Population Percentages for each strain and coordinates with inventory management, supply chain management, and retail operations to ensure needs are met.
  • Catalog and analyze each individual strain from clone to harvest.
  • Oversee all PM operations. Reports directly to Cultivation Manager to develop and execute preventative maintenance and elimination of all types of plant pests, pathogens, and fungus.
  • Advanced and innovative practices that promote efficiency and improvements with current processes.
  • Work closely with the Director of Cultivation on improving department logistics and operations, continuing to improve plant health and development, developing department structure, development of contingency plans for cultivation, and creating leadership pipelines.
  • Coordinates with the Facilities Manager to establish preventative maintenance. Works closely to ensure Environmental Set Points are being achieved and all HVAC systems are being in unison monitored to minimize failures and loss of crop.
  • Communicate and schedule cultivation needs, repairs, and improvements with Facility Management.
  • Work closely with procurement to ensure all Cultivation and Harvest inventory needs are being met.
  • Expert level knowledge and experience of diverse methodologies regarding the cultivation of cannabis and botany in general. High focus cultivation methods include: organic living soil, permaculture, and horticulture. (minimum of five (3) years of experience).
  • Advanced knowledge of microbiology.
  • Manage nutrient and fertilizer programs.
  • Work directly with third party consultants to provide optimal solutions.
  • Respond to facility related failures promptly while maintaining preventative tasks in accordance with facility needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, & Skills)

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Agronomy, Plant Sciences, or Horticulture preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience in managing commercial grade marijuana growing operations required.
  • 3+ years of people management experience.
  • Minimum Five (5) years of Commercial Cultivation or Agriculture experience required.
  • Expert understanding of cannabis genetics and plant characteristics.
  • Current with the evolving cannabis market, industry networking and positive community rapport.
  • Expert knowledge and experience identifying plant diseases, pests and health.
  • Preferred knowledge of lab grade practices.
  • Experienced team leader with a consistent positive attitude and a vision for the future met with actions and success.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with large scale commercial plant cultivation including nutrient requirements, soil/medium requirements, light requirements, environment controls, HVAC operations, etc. including but not limited to harvesting/trimming, drying, curing, manicuring.
  • Operational workflow and process improvement experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates excellent leadership skills and possessed a strong work ethic.
  • Must be organized and have attention to detail.
  • Experience and knowledge organizing training programs and task tiers for team members.
  • Age 21 or over (required).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an employee Agent Card from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position requires a lot of, lifting, walking, bending and reaching.
  • Must be able to maintain full schedule and attendance. Must abide to all extended hours due to any and all cultivation demands and operations.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, lift objects on a regular basis, and perform daily repetitive tasks.
  • Close visual focus required.
  • This position requires the extended and repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers to cut and manipulate small objects.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires some computer/office tasks such as typing, data collection & entry, flow charts, SOPs/Work Instructions, and all other duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to handle organic matter daily, able to wear PPE as appropriate (eye, face, hand, arm, head, foot, body, fall protection), and able to be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid conditions while wearing PPE.
  • Exposure to fungus, pests, insects, pollen, allergens, bio-fungicides, bio-pesticides in the grow facility.
  • Work environments that include exposure to, but not limited to, chemicals, fumes, dust, odors, extreme heat temperatures, heights, indoor AC, no AC, motion, noise, protective gear, vibrations, and water.
